Saltash - 22 vs. Torrington - 19
(Oct 17, League) Ashes scraped a hard fought win at Moorlands lane against Torrington this weekend. Some spectators would say Torrington deserved to win the contest. The score line was opened by Torrington's Andy Manning three minutes in with a straight forward penalty kick from the twenty two metre line, for Ashes putting hands in the ruck. The score line was swiftly re-addressed 4 minutes later when Ashes ran the ball out of their twenty two with Joe Skinnard drawing the defense to pop to Tod Croft who linked with Keiran Hurrell to go under the posts. With Croft adding the conversion, the score 7-3. Further Ashes pressure resulted in Ben Devonport charging down a clearance kick from the base of a ruck 10 metres from the Torrington line to take the score line to 12-3. Torrington then started to get into their stride with some clean takes off their own restarts, resulting in some strong forward work to bring them within 10 metres of the Ashes line. Number eight Mike Wigley then powered through the Saltash defense off a short ball to touch down just left of the posts, allowing Andy Manning the easy conversion. 12-10. Torrington continued to cause Ashes problems in their own twenty two, resulting in two almost successive penalty kicks to bring the half time scoreline to 12-16. The second half was very much even with Ashes having more possession but Torrington making their possession count. Ben Devonport was replaced by Julian Oaks for Ashes ten minutes in with a shoulder injury. This changed the dynamic of the Ashes pack some what. It was not until the seventieth minute that the score line was added to when Ashes were awarded a penalty in front of the Torrington posts. 15-16. The Ashes score sparked an immediate Torrington come back, gathering their own ball from the kick off and pressuring the Ashes try line, allowing Andy Manning to slot a drop goal, to put Ashes back under pressure. The last seven minutes were torturous viewing with Ashes camped on the Torrington line unable to find a way through the resilient defense. After the sixth penalty against Torrington Ashes were awarded a controversial penalty Try with Tod Coft adding the conversion. Ashes certainly made it hard for themselves with no time left on the clock, Ashes gathered the restart only to be turned over. Torrington countered, chipping over the defence for Ashes captain Steve Hillman to gather and call the mark. With no time left on the clock, the simple choice to kick the ball dead was not taken, and Ashes ran it back only to be turned over once more. With over a minute of rucking, the whistle was finally blew with a Torringotn knock on and a lucky escape for Ashes. Final score Ashes 22, Torrington 19. |
